Carb to EFI Swap

It’s a fact that I can’t leave well enough alone. That being said, I have decided it would be a great and challenging project to convert my ‘72 Mach 1 from carburation to fuel injection. This page will document my supposed progress towards said goal.

Intro

I’ve had my ‘72 Mach 1 since 2000 and in that time have rebuilt the engine, upgraded the transmission and generally made the car drivable from it’s previous state of non-runningness. EFI’ing this car will get me more involved in tuning on the older processors found in the foxbodied Mustangs and will also be huge in teaching me more about the PCM in the cars. My goal is to plan the entire build, purchase everything upfront and then in the span of a month install, tune and complete the swap.

Phase 1: Planning

Perhaps the most important (and intense) part of the whole gig, the planning of the entire swap. I have found several people that have done the swap (although none on a car like mine) and one company that also specialize in this sort of swap. That being said, I have some good resources to pull from in my quest of a computer controlled car.

I’ve started out by purchasing an A9L computer, wiring harnesses and MAF meter from a ‘89 Mustang for the princely sum of $194.50 shipped. This will be the largest expense of the whole project, but definitely not the last. I have a lot of items I have taken off of my ‘95 that I will reuse where applicable to save money.
